Getting Your Warehouse Ready For Summer
Now is the time to get your warehouse ready for the heat and humidity you will be dealing with in the coming months. Along with working toward reducing hazardous heat in the Retail Warehouse, there are some quick tasks that will make a huge difference for everyone.
Retail Warehouse Cleaning Up High
Have you ever turned on the ceiling fan at home for the first time after a long period of disuse? If you didn’t clean that fan first, as the blades started whirling the dust bunnies started flying. Something similar happens to ceiling fans in warehouses but the accumulated dust and debris is far worse than a single room can collect. Cleaning those fans makes a difference in air quality and could affect your inventory, too.
While you are up there, do what needs to be done up high. Light bulbs can be changed, fixtures can be cleaned, maybe filters changed. Your warehouse upper levels are easy to ignore but when it’s clean, it makes a difference. Even something as simple as dusting light bulbs makes a space brighter. Insulating the ceiling with panels that are white will let the light bounce around and can reduce the need for added lights in dark spaces while you are saving energy.
Cleaning Down Low
A clean space feels cooler to most people. Piles of cardboard and debris hold humidity and start to smell. Equipment that needs maintenance can run hotter than it should and add to the heat levels. Vinyl curtains can keep cool air in and hot air out. Dehumidifiers need to be emptied regularly and their filters need to be clean or they will add to the problem. Portable fans and air conditioners must be placed where they will do the most good without getting in the way. Safety supplies should be regularly checked so that they are ready to be used when someone needs help.
An overloaded warehouse is a miserable place to work and it also is an inefficient place to work. If the stock cannot be relocated to another site, clean out the excess by donating it or using it as an incentive giveaway to customers. The empty space can give you room to move safely and effectively.
